Guernica by Pablo Picasso

A large copy of this painting hangs in the United Nations Building. Picasso painted this artwork in response to the German bombing of civilians in the Spanish Basque town of  Guernica.  Picasso would not allow this painting to be hung in Spain until he was satisfied that Spain was under democratic leadership.
