Artists can create space in a composition through:
1. Placement-Objects high on
the compositional plane are read as
further away. Objects lower
on the compositional plane are read as
closer to us.
2. Overlapping-When one object
or figure overlaps another we read
spatial depth.
3. The use of warm and cool
colors. Remember that warm colors
advance and cool colors recede in
the composition?
4. Converging parallel lines also create a feeling of depth.
5. Clarity and distortion-Objects
that are clear are read closer
to us. Blurry, fuzzy, objects
are read as further away.

Describe the sense of space in the painting on the next page.
The next clue is also important in
helping us to understand the
meaning in works of art.
Shapes can be geometrical.
They can be biomorphic, those shapes
commonly found in nature.
What kinds of shapes do you find in the
painting, round, square, triangular,
rectangular?
Shapes can also be distorted for expressive purposes by the artist.
