Use a recycled water bottle and recycled paper to make handmade paper.

Shake It and Make It Handmade Paper

This is a project and process created by Art Teacher on the Net that will teach your students about recycling and get them up and moving.

What you will need:

2 sheets of colored paper

Empty plastic water bottle

Large Cookie Plastic Cutter Form  (Can be a Turkey, Boat, Flower, Anything)

Paper Plate

Paper Towels

Instructions:

Tear into small pieces and place l sheet of white paper and l sheet of colored paper into a plastic water bottle.  Pour warm water into the plastic bottle-about l/4 of the way up. Place the lid back on it. Now comes the fun part. Shake the bottle with your right hand about 100 times.  Then shake 100 times with the left hand. Now finally one more time 100 times. You can create a dance. Make a fun time out of it. Now place the plastic cookie cutter into a paper plate and fill the cookie cutter with the paper mixture. Next, drain as much water as you can.  Pat the paper mixture with a paper towel. Remove the cookie cutter and place the form onto the paper towel and then turn it over again.  You can let it dry to form a small sheet of paper or form it into a shape while it is still damp.

Cross Curriculum: Along with science, students will participate in much needed physical education as they shake and make this craft. It's also a good time to bring up environmental and recycling issues.
